In response to growing concerns over the increasing number of potholes in Mapusa, local social worker Sanjay Barde has taken matters into his own hands by launching a dedicated helpline to address the issue.

Frustrated by what he views as inadequate government efforts to repair the damaged roads, Barde has devised a community-driven solution to ensure the safety and comfort of Mapusa’s residents.

The newly established helpline number – 8390642378 – allows residents to report potholes directly to Barde’s team. Concerned citizens can either call the helpline or send photos of potholes via WhatsApp.

Upon receiving a report, Barde's team will be dispatched to the location to repair the pothole.

“We’ve seen how these potholes have become a serious issue, especially during the monsoon season. People are facing difficulties while commuting, and the risk of accidents has increased. Since the government's response has been slow and inadequate, we decided to step in and do something about it,” Barde explained.

The initial plan involves filling the potholes with stones and mud, which provides a temporary solution.

However, if weather conditions permit and there is no rain, the team will cement the area for a more durable repair.

Barde emphasised that this initiative is a stop-gap measure intended to mitigate the problem until the authorities take more permanent action.

“Our aim is to make the roads safer for everyone. We cannot wait indefinitely for the government to act, so we’re doing what we can with the resources available,” he said.

The initiative has already garnered positive responses from Mapusa residents, who appreciate the proactive approach.

The helpline is expected to operate continuously, ensuring that potholes are addressed promptly, especially in areas where they pose the greatest risk to drivers and pedestrians.

As the monsoon season continues, Barde said he and his team are prepared to work tirelessly to address the potholes, ensuring safer roads for all residents of Mapusa.
