Sonsodo dump catches fire yet again, cover destroyed

Fire tenders rushed to the Sonsodo waste dumping site on Saturday noon again as fire once again broke out at the site, destroying the membrane used to cover the dump yard to prevent leachate from flowing into the water bodies.

MARGAO

Methane gas generated underneath the dump yard is believed to be the cause of the fire, aggravated further by the covering of the site with a membrane.
This is the third time in as many days that Margao fire tenders had to rush to Sonsodo to extinguish the fire. Saturday noon saw Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai and Sanitary Inspector Viraj Arabekar inspecting the dump yard as fire was spotted once again at the dump yard.
While the fire fighters were engaged in the fire-fighting operation, the MMC Chairperson told The Goan at the site that she has intimated the incident to all the agencies, including the contractor, who has bagged the contract to segregate the waste at the site.
“Preliminary inquiries has revealed that the cause behind the fire is the methane gas generated underneath the yard. The covering of the site with a membrane has only made matters worse,” she said.
Given the situation, the membrane covering the portion of the site, hit by fire, was later kept open as a precautionary measure.
