South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Friday slammed the government over the worsening law and order situation in the State, saying the murders and deaths of tourists do not augur well for a tourist state like Goa.
Addressing the media, the MP said the murder of BJP leader Sonali Phogat has once again brought to the fore the deteriorating law and order situation in the State. He said the government should understand that the tourism and hospitality industry has become the mainstay of Goa’s economy, saying the worsening law and order situation does not ring in good news for tourism in the State.
Saying the other states such as Kerala are wooing tourists from Goa, Sardinha reminded that even other countries, which are depending on tourism, are leaving no stone unturned to woo tourists from Goa. “It is high time the Goa government understands how important tourism is for the people and the need to tone up the law and order situation,” he said.
The MP also took strong exception to WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar’s warning that the government would take over agricultural fields lying fallow. Sardinha said the WRD Minister should first find out why the people have kept the fields fallow, saying the primary reason that the fields are left fallow are they are no more lucrative for the cultivators.
The MP further demanded to put an end to contact workers, saying the government should regularize all contract workers in the State.
On the government’s decision to clear doles to the beneficiaries on the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi, Sardinha said it should understand that the beneficiaries look forward to receiving the doles every month and not just on the eve of festivities.
