South Goa MP tells Sawant not to destroy opposition

MARGAO

Congress South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Wednesday told Chief Minister Pramod Sawant not to destroy the opposition, even as he warned the Congress MLAs that the people will teach them a lesson if they dare defect to the ruling party.

He further said the oath taken before the Gods and Goddesses should not have been taken by the candidates in the first place, reminding that divorces take place despite couples swearing in the places of worship in the name of God.

Addressing the media, Sardinha questioned the BJP why the ruling party is out to destroy the opposition when they have a comfortable majority with the support of 25 MLAs.

“I would like to tell the Chief Minister that there’s a need for the opposition in a democracy so that the government does not commit blunders. Instead, the government should focus its attention on doing good for the people of the State and make them happy,” he said.

Turning to the Congress MLAs, he said the people will teach them a lesson if they defect to the ruling party.

“I was laughing when the Congress candidates have taken an oath before the Almighty. For, we still hear of divorces when couples take oath before God. But, the party must have done in good faith. The oath should not have taken place, but the MLAs have no right to leave the party on flimsy grounds,” he added.

The MP declined to comment on the party’s decision to file a disqualification petition against two MLAs, saying he would discuss the matter with the party leadership and the High Command.

Sardinha also rapped the government for the discrepancies in the reservation where there’s no presence of the communities. He said the government should not force the people to knock on the doors of the Judiciary now and then but make the right decisions in the interest of the people.

The South Goa MP reiterated his opposition to the track doubling project between Majorda and Vasco, saying the government should not bulldoze its way with the project.

He also demanded that the government adopt a resolution in the ongoing session of the Goa Legislative Assembly on legalizing dhirios so that the resolution is forwarded to the Centre to bring the required amendments.
