A tiger is believed to have killed two calves at Surla, causing fear among residents in the village.
The incident is reported to have taken place in the forested area about 500 metres away from the main Surla village. Two calves belonging to the Pingale family were found dead on Monday and after the matter was reported to the forest department, a forest team led by Deepak Tandel rushed to the site to investigate the incident.
Going by the nature and extent of injuries, it is suspected that a tiger may have killed the two calves.
Worried locals have demanded action to relocate the tiger away from human habitat to prevent further loss of livestock and to prevent any tragedy involving humans.
When contacted, Tandel said a proposal has been submitted to provide immediate assistance to the Pingale family for the loss of the two calves.
“The proposal for compensation will be approved soon,” said Tandel.
“It is difficult to ascertain the location of the tiger. Because of heavy rains in the area, it is not possible to affix special cameras to track the movements of the tiger,” he added.
The Pingale families are located in the forest areas and they encounter various hardships and dangers in moving to and from their homes in the forested areas. Efforts are underway to shift the Pingale brothers and their families away from the forested area.
