Speculation of party switch after Nuvem MLA’s meet with panchas

MARGAO

Congress heavyweight Alexio Sequeira’s get-together with some of the newly-elected panchas from the Nuvem constituency became the talking point in local political circles since last night after a worker reportedly gave the five-time MLA the go-ahead signal to take any political decision in the interest of the people and the constituency.

While conceding that he had a get-together with the newly-elected panchas from his constituency, Sequeira, however, asserted that he made no statement at the meeting that he is joining the BJP.

During the get-together, which was hosted by the MLA at Verna on Thursday evening for some of the newly-elected panchas, workers are believed to have insisted that Sequeira honour the promises made to the people of Nuvem constituency during the Assembly elections.

They pointed out that people had voted for the MLA with the hope that he would resolve their issues after coming to power. One of the workers is even believed to have stated that the MLA should not hesitate to take a call in the interest of the people and the constituency.

Even before the get-together could conclude, news spread in political circles that the Nuvem Congress MLA had a meeting with his supporters to seek their nod to quit and join BJP.

Sequeira, however, said there was no truth in the reports, terming them in political circles as mere speculations. “I had never called for a meeting with my party workers at Verna. It was just a get-together with some of our newly elected panchas of Nuvem constituency,” he said.

He added: “No doubt, some of the workers reminded me of the promises we gave the people during the Assembly polls. I told them that I stand by my promises, but at the same time pointed out that the Congress has not come to power.”

He told The Goan that a host of promises were indeed made to the people during the elections on the premises that the Congress would return to power. “Since the party has not come to power, I told the workers that I would use my relationship with some of the ministers to get the work done,” he said, adding that he never said at the meeting that he is quitting Congress to join BJP.
