Senior journalist Vishant Vaze from Bicholim passed away while undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College Hospital, Bambolim, on Sunday. He was 58.
Vaze had suffered a brain stroke a few days earlier and had been undergoing undergoing treatment at the GMC hospital.
Born on July 7, 1968, Vaze was working as Bicholim correspondent for a number of newspapers and had written extensively on news and other issues across Bicholim taluka.
Vaze will be remembered for the intervention petition he filed in the Supreme Court in 2023 regarding the buffer zone around Mhadei and Bhimgadh wildlife sanctuaries.
Based on the Intervention petition of Vaze, the Supreme Court issued notice to the Union Environment Ministry and Karnataka government. In recognition of his efforts, he was later congratulated and honoured by the Goa Legislative Assembly.
Vaze was honoured and felicitated by several government and non-government platforms for his dedicated work in the field of journalism.
The Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) had earlier felicitated him for his contribution to the field of mofussil journalism. He was recently honoured by the Goa Marathi Patrakar Sangh for his contribution to journalism. The GUJ has conveyed its deepest sympathies to the Vaze family.
The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee has also expressed condolences to the family, friends and colleagues on the untimely demise of Vaze.
“Vaze was a respected and committed member of Goa’s media fraternity who made a valuable contribution to journalism and public discourse through his years of dedicated work,” stated GPCC President Girish Chodankar.
“His untimely demise is a great loss to the journalistic community and to Goa. His professionalism, simplicity and contribution to the field of journalism will be remembered with respect.”
