In a shocking incident, a 45-year-old man stabbed his niece in her abdomen with a knife at Navelim on Thursday noon.
The 20-year-old girl, a second year old BA student, is battling for life at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim. The police have arrested her uncle Sheriff Sheikh under section 307 of the IPC for attempt to murder.
The incident occurred on Thursday noon at Sinquetim-Navelim. The accused entered the house only to find her niece alone. Police informed that the girl had just entered the house after answering her examination and was relaxing.
Sources said the accused, who was reportedly in an inebriated state, picked up a quarrel with his niece, who headed towards the kitchen to cook food, the accused followed her and stabbed her in abdomen.
Neighbours rushed to the house upon hearing her cries even as her uncle made good his escape. He is believed to have headed to the Margao police station and surrendered to the police with the knife.
Margao police station in-charge Ditendra Naik said the victim who was rushed to the hospital, was later shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
The Margao police is investigating the case.
