The state administration is geared up for elections across the seven panchayats of Chicalim, Sancoale, Bogmalo, Cortalim, Quelosssim, Velsao and Cansualim in Mormugao on Wednesday.
Various polling teams were dispatched to the respective polling booths after a meeting at Ravindra Bhavan in Baina, which is the distribution centre for Mormugao Taluka.
Polling materials were dispatched under police protection from Ravindra Bhavan under the supervision of Ranjeet Salgaonkar, the Returning Officer for the panchayat elections for Mormugao taluka.
Sources said a strong police force will be deployed for the smooth functioning of the elections on Wednesday.
"There are seven panchayat and 63 wards, but with one panch elected unopposed, we have 62 wards going for elections with a total of 220 candidates in the fray,” said a source.
“There are a total of 73 booths and we have also identified a few sensitive polling booths. Room 1 and 2 of Keshav Smruti School, Rooms 2, 3 and 4 of Regina Mundi School in Chicalim, Room 2 of Govt primary school, Zuarinagar, Rooms 1 and 2 of Govt High school Zuarinagar and Rooms 1, 2 and 3 of Govt Primary school at Zuarinagar have been identified as sensitive polling booths.”
“We will have five officials per booth and a total of 365 staff will be deployed across 73 booths. We will also have police staff deployed at all booths and the presence of police will be higher at sensitive booths," said the source.
