India’s first 10-tonnes-per-day (TPD) plastic waste to fuel plant was inaugurated in Pernem on Monday. The plant converts non-recyclable plastics into liquid energy.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane inaugurated the facility established by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) through M K Aromatics Ltd.
Rane expressed confidence that if the plant operates successfully, similar facilities will be established in other parts of Goa, addressing the long-standing issue of plastic waste and garbage.
The 10-tonnes-per-day (TPD) facility can process various types of plastic waste without the need for washing, shredding, or sorting, as informed by company officials. The company plans to set up 100 plastic collection centers across Goa, with one already launched in Mapusa.
It’s noteworthy that GSUDA had signed a contract with the company in November 2014, investing Rs 8.3 crore, but operational issues delayed the plant’s efficient functioning.
Separately, Pernem Municipality, classified under ‘C’ category with limited income sources and infrastructure, along with Valpoi and Sanguem Municipalities, will receive additional funds. Rane assured discussions with the Chief Minister to increase their existing budget from Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 5 crore, addressing the unique challenges these municipalities face. Furthermore, he pledged support for women’s self-help groups by allocating funds in the upcoming budget.
