Strong show of hands for mobile tower in Guleli

P’yat decides to issue NOC for tower after resolving issue by 94-14 votes

VALPOI

After facing mixed views from the people regarding the installation of a mobile tower, the Guleli panchayat decided to issue NOC to the tower after resolving the issue by 94-14 votes at a special gram sabha on Sunday.

The gram sabha, which was chaired by Deputy Sarpanch Nitesh Gawade in the absence of the sarpanch, had been convened to discuss the issue after some people from the vicinity had opposed the installation of the mobile tower.

It may be recalled that people were complaining of poor mobile signal in the area

and there had been demands for a mobile tower in the

vicinity.

However, people residing in the area had objected to the proposed mobile tower citing health reasons and the Guleli panchayat decided to convene a special Gram Sabha to resolve the issue.

Panchayat Secretary Mula Varak read out the proceedings of the previous meeting, before the present issue regarding NOC to the mobile tower was taken up for discussion.

Raising concern over the proposed mobile tower, Pradeep Desai feared the radiation would cause health issues and strongly felt that the mobile tower should not be installed within the premises of the Guleli panchayat.

Opposing Desai, other villagers supported the proposal and claimed that the absence of a mobile tower had deprived areas of good mobile connectivity, thereby denying them mobile and internet services.

Following the mixed reactions, panchayat decided to out the issue to vote. While 94 people supported the NOC for the tower, 14 voted against it.

Those supporting the mobile tower welcomed the resolution and requested the panchayat to make the facility available as soon as possible.

Speaking to The Goan, Gawade said the meeting was specially convened to take an appropriate decision on the tower.

“The gram sabha has resolved to install the mobile tower in the village, which will also benefit surrounding villages,” said Gawade.
