Students rush to seek DEd courses at Porvorim

Their education backgrounds may be diverse - ranging from Bachelor of Computer Application, LLB, BSc (Microbiology), Diploma in Instrumentation and degrees in Arts, Science and Commerce, but all these students had something in common.
They have all applied for admission to the Diploma in Education course at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) in Porvorim, which enables them to take up teaching as a profession.
The DIET has finalized the merit list of students seeking admission to the first-year Diploma in Education. The merit list has been displayed on the notice board of the institute.
Speaking to The Goan, DIET Vice-Principal Devidas Kudav said they received 345 applications for 50 seats in English medium and 90 applications for 50 seats in Marathi medium.
“The eligibility criteria for admission to DEd course was minimum 50 percent marks (aggregate) at higher secondary examination and 45 percent marks in English. Students who passed the examinations like Bachelor of Computer Application, LLB, BSc (Microbiology), Diploma in Instrumentation and had obtained degrees in Arts, Science and Commerce applied for DEd courses,” informed Kudav.
“Most applications were received from areas of Valpoi, Sattari, Sanguem and Canacona and about 90 percent of the applicants were girls,” added Kudav.
Kudav further said DIET at Porvorim is the only government institute in Goa which conducts DEd courses. “There are two more private institutes - one at Colvale and the other at Altinho-Panaji which also conduct DEd courses, but their fee structure is quite high as compared to DIET,” he added.
“Better pay structure for primary teachers and the possibilities of getting teaching job faster are the main reasons which attract the students to join diploma in education course. School managements from neighbouring schools also visit DIET to conduct campus interviews,” said Kudav.
