A tragic fall at an under-construction warehouse in Sancoale claimed the life of a disabled labourer after he reportedly slipped through an opening in the roof while carrying out cleaning work on Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred at around 15.00 hrs on Monday at a warehouse shed of Varama India Logistic and Infrastructure at Upasnagar. The deceased has been identified as Peshkar Ashok Kumar, a native of Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, who had his right hand amputated from the elbow.

As per the complaint filed by PSI Prisley Carvalho of Verna Police Station, the site supervisor Sanjeev Kumar, a native of Auraya, Uttar Pradesh, attached to contractor R.S. Infrastructure, allegedly instructed the victim to clean the shed roof despite being aware of his disability. Police said the disabled labourer was lifted onto the roof using a crane bucket and was not provided with any safety equipment.

While walking on the tin sheet roof, the victim reportedly slipped through an open gap kept for installation of transparent fibre sheets meant for sunlight, and fell from a height of approximately 14 metres onto the shed floor. He sustained grievous injuries and was later declared dead at PHC Cansaulim.

Based on the complaint, Verna police have registered an offence under section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the supervisor. The accused’s role in assigning hazardous work without safety measures is under scrutiny.

Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Prisley Carvalho under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
