Man booked for burning alive protected python in Candolim

In a shocking case of alleged animal cruelty, Calangute Police have registered an offence against a Candolim resident for reportedly burning alive a protected species of snake, the Indian Rock Python.

According to police sources, the case was registered following a complaint filed by Darryl Finch, Field Officer of the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA).

The incident occurred at Orda, Candolim.

The accused, identified as Mehboob, a resident of Orda in Candolim is alleged to have deliberately set fire to a live Indian Rock Python, resulting in the reptile’s death.

The Indian Rock Python is a protected species under wildlife laws, making the offence particularly grave.

Police have registered the case under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which pertains to acts of cruelty resulting in harm.

Authorities said further investigation is underway, with PSI Saieel Vaigankar leading the probe.

Officials are expected to examine the circumstances leading to the incident and determine whether additional charges under wildlife protection laws may be invoked.
