PANAJI
Furtado has been elected as the mayor for the second time and this is his sixth term as a corporator, while Lata Parekh has been elected as a corporator as well as the deputy mayor for the first time.
Speaking to The Goan, Furtado said, “I welcome the decision of the BJP. They have shown the true spirit of democracy. Now myself, Babush and Panaji MLA will work together in the interest of the city. There will not be any politics.”
Atanasio Monserrate, while speaking to The Goan said he intends to keep the mayor for the full five years in office, while the deputy mayor could be shuffled every year.
“As far as I am concerned, the mayor should be for full five years. Nothing can be achieved in one year and you cannot have a report card ready in one year. The deputy mayor will be shuffled depending on consensus.
The mayor and deputy mayor will call on the chief minister and deputy chief minister on Tuesday at the Assembly after they take charge of their office and seek their cooperation.
“I believe that we all have to come together to develop Panaji. Even on the committees as a rule we have kept four members from our side and two members from their side,” Monserrate said.
Meanwhile, Panaji MLA Sidharth Kuncalienkar said, “We will be a constructive Opposition. All the 30 corporators should work for the welfare of Panaji. We will support all positive initiatives of the Mayor to make Panaji better.”
