With no action forthcoming from PWD authorities, locals in Canacona have begun using their own funds and manpower to repair dilapidated roads in their areas.
They had expected the PWD to repair the roads before the monsoons but with no work in sight, the locals have matters, quite literally, in their own hands.
In one such incident, locals of Talpona (Ward 6) in Poinginnim on Sunday began the work to repair potholes on the village road using their own resources and manpower.
The locals involved in the road-repair work included Vikas Prabhu, Sriranga Pagui, Santosh Metri, Ravi Pagui, Nilesh Pagui and Chandrahas Pagui.
After facing hardships while using the road since the last one year, the locals mobilised materials such as sand and cement, and covered the potholes to level the road.
“There is no point continuing to wait for authorities to act and we thank the youth for leading from the front and repairing the potholed road by themselves,” acknowledged a grateful resident.
Last week, the sarpanch of Agonda repaired a road in the village using his own resources and spent over Rs 53,000, after complaining that authorities are turning a blind eye to the public needs.
