Taxi aggregators: Sardesai urges transport dept to strike balance

Says can't suddenly invite taxi aggregators, must see how Goans benefit

VASCO

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Thursday appealed to the transport department to strike the right balance while inviting taxi aggregators into the State.
Sardesai was speaking to reporters at Sada after wishing Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar in the presence of Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa and Goa Forward Party General Secretary Durgadas Kamat.
"The High Court has said there has to be technology intervention while installing meters and when taxi operators are agreeing to install the meters, we suddenly cannot also call taxi aggregators in the State. My request to Mauvin Godinho is that although his move to rope in aggregators appears popular for the public, we have to also understand that taxi drivers are Goans. We have to see how Goans benefit in Goa and we just can't get people from outside and give them our business," said Sardesai.
Sardesai said the government should strike the right balance between not overpricing fares and providing employment to Goan youth who are engaged in the taxi business.
"Even taxi drivers cannot say they don't want new technology because it will never be accepted even by the High Court because there is a need for standardisation. We need to have a balanced approach while thinking of the benefit of the people and also realising that taxi drivers who could be affected are Goans. We should not go to extremities while taking such decisions so that one group suffers while other benefits," said Sardesai.
