It is important for teachers to be able to see the potential in their students if they are to bring it out, Nobel laureate Prof Christiane Nusslein-Volhard said while speaking during an interaction with teachers held at the Kala Academy during the ongoing “Nobel Prize Series” said.
Another laureate, Professor Serge Haroche was also of the opinion that it is important to have a teacher who can open a students’ imagination and mind. Another Nobel Laureate Professor Serge Haroche while sharing his experience said that he was lucky to study in the institution which gave
him the freedom to express, and also gave an opportunity to bring out his potential.
“For teachers it is important to see the potential of their students and bring out their capabilities,” Nusslein-Volhard the 1995 Nobel Prize winner in Physiology/Medicine in 1995, together with Eric Wieschaus and Edward B Lewis, for their research on the genetic control of embryonic development, said adding
that teachers and students should choose something in the long run that makes one happy.
Answering a question about whether education and innovation are linked together Professor Serge Haroche said that education is a long-term activity which gives future results whereas innovation is a short-term activity which includes all processes by which new ideas are generated and converted into useful products which are pushed faster to get the financial outcome.
“Nowadays, it has become easier to get knowledge as there are many sources from where we can derive information,” Prof Volhard said while recollecting her days in learning and research.
Professor Richard J Robert, another Nobel laureate said that the power of communicating is very important.
“One of the things that scientists cannot do is to communicate with the people. If they are able to communicate, it will be easier for them to explain their experiment to the people,” he said.
Finally, answering a question about how teachers can contribute to a better world Professor Richard said that it is important for a teacher to realize that while teaching student you are also creating an impact on parents.
