PANAJI: Goa has 3.4 million square feet of area under green buildings. This was informed by S Raghupathy, regional chair for Asia Pacific Network of World Green Building Council.
Raghupathy was speaking at Goa Environment Conclave jointly organised by Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Green buildings are more environment friendly than other buildings. To certify buildings as green on several parameters, IGBC follows detailed methodology. Explaining the benefits of green buildings, Raghupathy said, “Per million square feet area under green buildings results in reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 15,500 tons.”
During his presentation, Raghupathy gave a number of suggestions to make buildings in Goa green to Town and Country Planning Minister, Vijai Sardesai, who was present at the conclave.
Raghupathy said, “One of our suggestions is that the builder should get 10% additional floor-area-ratio (FAR) if the building is rated platinum by IGBC. He further proposed 7.5% extra FAR for gold certified buildings by IGBC and 5% extra FAR for silver certified buildings by IGBC.”
He also said that 50 villages in Goa can be adopted to go green as per IGBC ratings. He also suggested to Sardesai that the secretariat building can also go green by following IGBC suggestions.
