Tendulkar advocates need to spread RTI through students

PONDA

Chief Information Commissioner Prashant Tendulkar on Saturday advocated need to spread awareness on the Right to Information Act through higher secondary schools and colleges.

Tendulkar was addressing students of GVM's higher secondary school at Farmagudi at a programme organized by ‘People of Ponda’ (POP) in association with Goa State Information Commission on Right to Information Act.

Dr Ketan Govenkar, Krishna Shetye, POP president Dr Rajendra Dev, principal of GVM’s College P M Bhende and others were also present on the occasion.

“Awareness in this area is needed. This we can achieve by holding workshops in higher secondary schools and colleges. Students can play important role to achieve this aim,” he said.

“I feel that RTI work is on the right track and government officials are also aware that if work is delayed, people will use tool of RTI (to seek justification on the delay),” Tendulkar said.

“However, we also see misuse of RTI taking place. Some use this privilege for vested interests. RTI should be used for good intentions,” Tendulkar added.

Stating that students have no bias and no ego, he said they could be the right medium to spread awareness of RTI.

Dr Ketan Govenkar explained to the students the nature, use and powers under RTI and students later interacted with him on related issues.
