Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho has said that Goans have had enough of the tourist taxi operators in the State and it was time to turn to cab aggregators Ola and Uber to give an opportunity for cheap transport to Goans and tourists.
“In spite of providing free meters to the taxi operators, they are not charging the fare by the meter. At every stage the taxi owner resisted us. So I have decided to do a rethink. Why shouldn't Ola and Uber come to Goa? Let Goan people enjoy cheap transport. It should happen,” Godinho said.
He said there was no point in giving free meters to the taxi owners who have no respect for the High Court order and the government of the day and by their action, they were inviting Ola and Uber to the State.
“In every other field, there is competition with each other. So let taxi people also compete with each other,” he said.
He further said that earlier some politicians were supporting the taxi operators but that would not happen now.
“I have told all politicians cutting across party lines not to support the taxi people. We have done enough damage to tourism. If no politicians support them then nothing will happen,” Godinho said.
