MAPUSA
Mapusa Municipal Council Councillor Tushar Tople on Thursday advocated taking the law into our own hands to deal with a rapist before he is tried in a court of law.
“Rape incidents have been rising rapidly in our country. It’s time we take law in our hands when people indulge in such heinous crimes such as rape,” Tople said.
The councillor was speaking at the candlelight march in Mapsua held to demand justice for the eight-year-old girl who was brutally raped and murdered in Kathua in J&K three months ago.
Continuing further, Tople said until a court sentences a rape accused, the locals should hand over their own justice to the accused.
He said rape follows no caste and religion and people should act swiftly to bring a rapist to justice.
RJ Pankaj stressed on the need to bring change in the archaic laws against rape in the country.
“There should be an urgency to fasttrack such heinous rape cases. Our laws against rape need to be overhauled to make them more stringent,” Pankaj said.
He said there was no fear for law in our country. “In the Middle East, a rape accused immediately gets a death sentence but in India the cases drags on for years,” he said.
He also appealed to parents to listen to their little children and take corrective measures when things go wrong.
“The brutal rape in Kathua only goes on to show that humanity is the biggest loser in our country,” Pankaj said and appealed to the gathering to help a woman in distress.
Sushmita Gaekar of Mapusa also spoke on the occasion.
The candlelight march to raise a voice for justice to Asifa began at Khorlim, Mapusa and wound through to the main streets of Mapusa before culminating at Hutatma Chowk.
