Traditional Goan vendors on Wednesday finally shifted to the recently renovated old market complex in Vasco.
Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Leo Rodrigues has now appealed to people to stop buying from roadside vendors to encourage business in the old market complex.
Speaking to reporters, MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said the MMC had initiated a drive to act on any vendors continuing to operate from roadsides and footpaths.
"We had requested traditional Goan Vendors to shift to this old market complex. They have cooperated with us and we are thankful to them. We now urge vendors operating from footpaths and roadsides to enter the old market complex because we will start a drive to act against such vendors.”
“Even in the temporary fish market shed, we have put a concrete base and we will also shift all roadside fruits vendors inside the temporary shed within a week to ensure that footpaths and roads are free of encroachment and there is no traffic congestion," said Rodrigues.
Councillor Shami Salkar appealed to people to stop buying from roadside vendors.
“This renovated market complex is neat and clean. We want people to stop buying from footpath vendors so that business in this old market can be encouraged,” said Salkar.
“These traditional vendors may be scared of losing business after shifting into the new premises, because they feel that people are used to buying from the roadsides. We appeal to people to buy all traditional products under one roof in this market complex and stop encouraging roadside vendors," said Salkar.
MMC Councillor Girish Borker said the newly renovated complex was pending inauguration for a few years because of some technical glitch.
"The issues have been sorted and vendors have finally shifted to this location. We have only got the area demarcated for vendors and this complex will be formally inaugurated in a few days.”
“This shifting has ensured that vendors get a clean space and good environment while also achieving the motto of having encroachment-free roads and footpaths, which will decrease the traffic congestion and also avoid road accidents.”
“We need people's support to come to this market which was existing since the Portuguese era so that while vendors get business, people also benefit from clean footpaths and clear roads," said Borker.
