A tanker driver and a motorcycle rider were killed while three persons in a car were injured in two separate mishaps in Ponda taluka on Friday.
In one incident, the tanker driver was killed when a water tanker which was hit by a truck rammed into an oncoming car and overturned on the road at Mapa-Panchawadi on Friday afternoon.
According to police, the water tanker was going from Sanvardem to Panchawadi, when an oncoming truck carrying crushed metal stones (khadi) hit the tanker on a narrow road at Mapa.
The tanker driver lost control of the vehicle and dashed an oncoming car. The tanker turned turtle, and the driver, Mohamad alias Hasan Abbas Shiledar (42) from Anandwadi-Sanvordem was killed on the spot.
Three persons travelling in the car, including one Chandravati Korgaonkar (72), were injured and taken to the Curchorem Primary Health Centre.
The Ponda-Sanvordem road was blocked for about three hours following the mishap and passenger buses along the route were held up along with other vehicles. Many passengers had to walk from Mapa to
Sanvardem.
Police teams from Curchorem and Ponda went to the site and managed to get the overturned tanker cleared with the help of a crane, restoring traffic along the route.
In the other incident, a two-wheeler rider Shravan Hari Naik also died on the spot when the motorcycle he was riding dashed a divider on the flyover bridge at Curti and died on the spot.
According to police, Shravan had borrowed his friend’s motorcycle and had proceeded to Usgao.
He was was returning from Usgao when he lost control of the bike and dashed a divider, ramming into an electricity pole. Shravan died on the spot.
