Authorities in Kansas City have confirmed that two juveniles have been charged in connection with the deadly mass shooting that occurred during a rally celebrating the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory. One person was killed, and 22 others, including nine children, were injured in the incident.
Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced on Friday that the two suspects have been charged in family court as minors, but specific details were not provided. However, Baker's office stated their intention to seek to try the suspects as adults under Missouri law, which requires charging them as juveniles initially.
The shooting took place during a dispute among multiple individuals as the Chiefs' rally was concluding. Police recovered several firearms from the scene. The parade and rally, which attracted over a million fans, ended abruptly when the sound of gunshots sent attendees scrambling for safety.
Two bystanders at the rally intervened and detained one of the suspects, while police continue to search for the others involved. The victims of the shooting ranged in age from 8 to 47, with Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a local radio personality, tragically losing her life.
Nine children injured in the shooting were treated at Children's Mercy Hospital, where they were expected to recover. Additionally, two other children with non-gunshot injuries and an adult victim received medical attention at the hospital.
