Amid controversies and alleged feuds, Minister Govind Gaude debunks misconceptions, revealing some stark truth. He has shed light on attempts at tarnishing his political reputation. He speaks to The Goan.
THE GOAN: How do you look at the ongoing differences between Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar and yourself that have been widely discussed? What efforts have been made to reconcile?
GOVIND GAUDE: I am not aware of any differences between us that are talked about. Since we first met, even before any agitation, we have maintained a cordial relationship based on common cause. When he became MLA, I was a political novice, and when I entered the Assembly, he was not an MLA for the last term. Yet, we treated each other with warmth and mutual respect. But I am shocked by what transpired suddenly.
I haven't raised any issues, and concerning the framed allegations, concerned people have addressed them with evidence in the press, so I have nothing to reconcile. But I am pained that all of a sudden, the allegations were racked up on the eve of the Assembly session outside the assembly business. It was done without verifying the facts and bypassing all Assembly procedures.
TG: You've claimed that allegations against you are politically motivated. Please elaborate on that, mainly because, as of now, there are no indications from the government to drop ministers or reshuffle portfolios.
GAUDE: Over the past two years, I've found myself at the receiving end of numerous criticisms and allegations that lacked any basis. There is an attempt to target me. It is perplexing, as I'm still determining who the instigators are and their ultimate motives. But why did the matter arise during the assembly session? I have no answers, although it is evident that there's a concerted effort to tarnish my reputation without verifying the facts.
These are not my words but the sentiments of the people of Goa. I entered politics to give voice to the struggles of people. I have joined the Party and have been getting their support. Earlier, I was an independent candidate.
TG: About the cancellation of the Art & Culture event in Canacona, there's speculation about the deliberate exclusion of the Speaker's name from the invitation card. Was this intentional, and was the cancellation influenced by him?
GAUDE: I can't speak to the intentions behind it because it falls within the purview of the organizers. Regarding the cancellation, it rests with the organizers. I never made demands regarding event arrangements. I have not attended a single state event in Canacona to date. However, there have been instances where my name was included without my consent simply because I am the concerned minister.
My department's role primarily revolves around providing grants under the Art & Culture scheme. We examine the applications and allocate funds accordingly, without direct involvement about where it is held. Moreover, the department doesn't cover 100 per cent of event expenses. It supports the conduct of art events.
TG: What is your reaction to the allegations of funds misappropriation amounting to Rs 26.85 lakh?
GAUDE: These allegations have surfaced suddenly without any evidence. On the contrary, the allegations fall flat on evidence produced by organizers. Our department follows a transparent approval process, and people can apply for financial assistance under the schemes. One should understand that eligibility can only be allowed if met.
TG: Is there a possibility of resolving this ongoing rivalry?
GAUDE: I have not harboured enmity towards anyone throughout my political years. I am unaware if there are those who perceive me as their enemy because I have never backstabbed anyone. While I cannot speak for others, from my standpoint, I hold no enmity or bear grudges against any person.
TG: Don't you think the tribal community will be the losers if top leaders like Speaker and you split?
GAUDE: Presently, the tribal community is well-informed and capable of discerning current affairs. Ultimately, they must decide. As for me, my loyalty to the community is unquestionable, and I am committed to their welfare. I stand by them and prioritize their interests above all else.
