Usgao teen run over by ore truck, dies

PONDA: A teenage scooterist from Ganje-Usgao died on Saturday morning after a truck carrying ore ran over him near Kamala theatre at Usgao.

According to Ponda police, the accident took place at around 9.15 am when the truck (GA-05-T-2587) was going towards Amona, while Shubham Sakhalkar (19) was riding his scooter (GA-05-K-7136) in the opposite direction.

It is believed that the accident took place while the teen was in the process of overtaking a truck in front of him forcing him to move to the wrong side of the road and in the path of the oncoming truck.

Furious over the incident that claimed the life of a teenager, an irate mob stopped ore transportation, causing further tension in the area. A police team later pacified the agitators and defused the situation.

In a statement to the media, Vedanta's head of corporate communications (Sesa Goa Iron Ore Division) Sangeetha R Chakravarthy admitted that an accident had taken place in Usgao involving one of their ore-laden trucks.

“The scooterist was overtaking which caused the accident. Our truck was within the speed limit of 30-35 kmph and compliant as per rules,” read the statement.

Ponda Police Sub Inspector Ajay Dhuri conducted the pachanama and the body was sent for post mortem at GMC hospital in Bambolim. Ponda police is investigating the case.
