Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar has now got the WRD contractors to press a de-weeding machine in the fields of Orulem to prevent water logging in the low lying area.
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar along with Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker and officials of the WRD carried out a joint inspection of the works of
de-weeding in the area.
"This is the first time that we have asked the WRD department to press for a de-weeding machine in the area. This machine will clear the area and de-silt the base of the lake so that we can increase the water storing capacity and prevent the water from coming on the road. The only solution to prevent the water logging in this area is to increase the water storing capacity of the nearby lakes and water bodies. However, this is a low lying area and rain water will definitely enter the area with its natural flow, Said Salkar.
"We have seen that there is no flooding in Vasco despite incessant and torrential rains. This is because we have cleaned all the gutters and de-silted all the Nullahs. After a gap of so many years, we can see a very beautiful Tanya lake without weeds and people are talking of boating in the area. We have done the de-weeding of the entire lake and there has been no flooding in Vasco but this area in Orulem and Belabai are low lying areas and the water is bound to enter the area. However, if we de-silt the adjoining water bodies and increase their water holding capacity, the water will not flow on the roads and into the houses which is a temporary solution to prevent water logging and flooding in the low lying area, said Salkar.
MMC Chairperson Girish Borker said that the low lying area of Orulem had always been flooding in the monsoons.
"Nothing much can be done since the houses are in the low lying area. However Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar has come with this great initiative to get the nearby lakes de-silted so that water storing capacity can be increased. There is huge expectations of the people from our MLA because nothing was done in the last three decades. We are doing our best but there are a few elements who are trying to misguide the people by posting videos on social media. We are carrying out all the efforts to increase the roads, build new culverts and find a solution but being Government works, it requires formalities and takes time as we tender the projects, said Borker.
