Vasco MLA expresses happiness over no flooding in port town

VASCO

Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Friday expressed happiness after the city did not witness flooding despite incessant rains in the last few weeks.

Salkar also kicked off deweeding works at Mundvel lake through the WRD department in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Leo Rodrigues, councillor Girish Borker, Former MMC Chairpersons Kritesh Gaonkar, Nandadeep Raut and others.

Salkar said that the authorities had done a great job in regards to pre-monsoon works to ensure that the city did not witness flooding.

"I must thank all the officials of the WRD department for having desilted major areas way ahead of monsoons and the MMC for their efforts without which this would not be possible. We have seen that there has been incessant rains in the last few weeks but there are no reports of water logging or flooding in the Port town. We have completed the desilting of major nullahs before monsoons and we are now taking the remaining part for desilting to further prevent any chances of flooding. We are hopeful that there is no flooding this time but sometimes due to heavy rains in a continuous stretch of days, we could face a little water logging and we have seen how many areas were water logged with the slightest of rains. This time we have personally taken an interest to ensure that there are no clogged drains anywhere and the MMC has done fantastic pre-monsoon works ahead of time," said Salkar.

MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said that the WRD had taken up desilting works in various areas of Vasco and Baina as well.

"The MMC has got the full support of the MLA and this has helped us take up a lot of works on time and get all the required support from the WRD department as well. While we have seen how some hot spots like IOC Junction would witness flooding with the slightest rains, this time there has been no flooding. Our main aim is to ensure that the city does not witness flooding," said Rodrigues.

Former Chairperson Nandadeep Raut said that it was extremely vital that the lake in Mundvel had to be cleared.

"This is also one of the major points and it is good that the lake is being cleared today. We have seen that water from Ward no 12 to 18 passed from this area and many a time the exit flow of rainwater slows here. Once this lake is desilted and deweeded, it will improve the flow of rainwater and prevent water logging in wards 12, 13 and 14 as well," said Raut.
