With a series of fires putting Vasco’s emergency response capabilities in focus, the port town’s firefighting preparedness has assumed added significance given the presence of critical installations, including naval facilities, defence establishments, the airport and major industrial units.
The recent blaze at the modern market and two other fires on the very day have also highlighted the role of several agencies, including the Indian Navy, in supporting Goa’s Fire and Emergency Services during major firefighting operations.
Vasco Fire Station recently received two new water tenders, each with a capacity of around 4,000 to 4,500 litres, to strengthen its firefighting capabilities. One of the vehicles joined the fleet in August when Chief Minister Pramod Sawant inducted a new batch of firefighting vehicles at a ceremony held at DFES HQ, St Inez.
Officials told The Goan that both tenders at the fire station remain in good condition. The newly inducted 42-metre turntable ladder also played an important role during the firefighting operation at Sunday market.
It was in August that five water tenders procured under the 15th Finance Commission for Rs 5.43 crore approx were inducted. The government also procured three additional water tenders worth around Rs 4.49 crore to replace condemned firefighting vehicles.
The new vehicles went to fire stations in Canacona, Curchorem, Vasco, Pilerne, Pernem, Margao and Ponda, replacing ageing vehicles and strengthening emergency response capabilities across the State.
The vehicles also feature GPS-based tracking systems that allow authorities to monitor their movement in real time and improve emergency dispatch. The department further strengthened field mobility through eight operational motorcycles procured through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).
Officials concede that Vasco benefits from the presence of several central and industrial establishments that maintain their own firefighting infrastructure. “The Indian Navy, Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) and Zuari Industries’ firefighting resources supplement the State Fire Services during major emergencies,” the official added. “We also get quick reinforcement from fire stations located in closer vicinity.”
The Indian Navy mobilised five Defence Fire Tenders from INS Gomantak, INS Hansa and the Naval Armament Depot (NAD) under Headquarters, Goa Naval Area. The officials further stated that naval firefighting teams worked along with the personnel from Goa Fire and Emergency Services. Their coordinated efforts helped bring the blaze under control,” he revealed.
