In fact, even as senior NH officials has expressed doubts and reservations about the proposal to notify the Eastern bypass as the National Highway, the TCP Minister said he has already spoken to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on the issue, adding that he would take up the matter at the ensuing Cabinet meeting so that the proposal is taken to its
logical conclusion.
“My objective in mooting the proposal to notify the Eastern bypass as the NH is only to give relief to the beleaguered bar owners, who are around 1,000 in number. Is the Eastern bypass not wide enough to qualify to be a National Highway? Certainly, the Eastern bypass is wider when compared to the existing NH-17 that passes through the commercial capital,” Sardesai said.
He pointed out that though NH officials may look at the issue from the technical point of view, the government is willing to meet the requirements so that bar owners get relief from the SC order,” he said.
