Back in 1974, it was more of a nomination by the government. i.e. tourism department. However, today, it is entirely based on a selection process. The Tourism Department (GTDC) along with the consultant invites applications. 2-3 people interviewed us, while a poll by nine people was also conducted. Six of us attended the interview. But I don't know if more people were involved.
As King Momo, I play a role as the ruler of Goa for four days, encouraging my subjects to enjoy themselves, have a nice time - eat, drink and make merry. But my request to all is: while we all live our life well, we have to be responsible to ourselves and others and the environment as a whole.
I want people to be responsible, especially youngsters, and understand that you don't need drugs and substance abuse in order to have a good time in Goa.
No. I have been King Momo for Henry's Music Cafe back in the year 2000. I also have a prior experience of being King Momo for various dances in South Goa.
Ii is not clear what the government has in mind. Vulgarity has no place in Goa's Carnival. But, people should be allowed to wear whatever they want. Carnival is an occasion to have a good time and to boost government's efforts in projecting the event as a major festival in India.
Everything has got its pros and cons. Earlier, Carnivals were known to be jolly and participatory in nature. Now, due to security concerns and other problems which have crept in, the government has erected barricades. So, the audience cannot partake in the celebrations. But commercialisation is good and Carnival has become viable with industry promoting some floats in the sponsored category. Good floats cannot be possible without some commercialisation.
Earlier, there was no monetary inducement to participate in Carnival celebrations. Today, some are looking at it as a means to make money. The pleasure is lacking. But I have personally promoted 'khell tiatr' in and around Curtorim. Without khell tiatr, Carnival lacks flavour.
Yes! I am happy with the government's efforts at promoting Carnival, and they should be commended for this. It has brought in event sponsors, consultants, et el, who wish to make it a flagship entertainment event of the country.
