The focus of attention once again shifts to the national capital as the Supreme Court is expected to hear and dispose of the government’s petition challenging the High Court verdict on ward reservations for the municipal polls on Tuesday morning.
While Tuesday will see the final list of candidates who will be left in the fray for the elections to the five municipal bodies, a legal battle between the government and the lawyers representing the petitioners is expected in the Apex court.
Both sides seem to have drawn up their respective strategies on how to go about in the court when the matter comes up for hearing on Tuesday morning.
Goa Forward Vice-president Durgadas Kamat has already descended on the national capital on Sunday with as many as four lawyers from Goa. They were are believed to have gone into a huddle with them in Delhi.
Sources in the know say the petitioners are expected to draw the attention of the court to how the government and the State Election Commission are going ahead with the polls without implementing the constitutionally-mandated 33 per cent reservation for women.
Leader of the Opposition, Digambar Kamat, who celebrated his birthday on Monday, said that he is hopeful that the Supreme Court would do justice by directing the government to carry out the ward reservations in both letter and spirit.
Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai said he has full confidence that the Supreme Court would do justice in the ward reservations.
Both Sardesai and Kamat have not yet unveiled the names of their candidates, who would be contesting on their respective banners, apparently waiting for the Supreme Court verdict.
