It was a proud moment for 19-year old Curca lad Teddy Cardozo who won the 7 km race titled ‘Run Against Drugs’ organized by the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) on June 26 at Dr Shyama Prsad Mukherjee stadium. However, the win is turning into a sour moment for Cardozo and other prize winners as they have yet to get the prize money for their performance.
Speaking to The Goan, Cardozo informed that though he was awarded the trophy for the victory, he has yet to receive the prize money.
“I have inquired with an ANC official who has been stating that the file is still not cleared by the government,” Cardozo stated while informing that his colleagues Salman Khan from Margao who won the second place and Vijay Vishwakarma from Mapusa who won third place in the race have also not received the prize money.
Cardozo further informed that the award for winning first place was Rs 10000, second place Rs 6000 and third place Rs 4000.
“Last year I won the second place in the same event and the prize money was immediately given,” he added.
When contacted, an ANC official confirmed that the approval of the file is pending with the undersecretary (home) and it should take another two weeks to get it approved.
“Not only the men but even the winners in the ladies section have not got their prize money as well as winners of the drawing contest,” the official stated and added that the expenditure incurred for the printing of banners is also not cleared. “Even the trophies dues of Rs 10000 is pending,” the official informed.

Macau half marathon
OLD GOA: Even as nonreceipt of the prize money for winning the race organized by ANC has been a disappointment for Curca’s Teddy Cardozo, it is not holding him back as he is preparing to participate in the junior nationals athletics championship as well as the Macau half marathon.
Speaking to The Goan, Cardozo said that he will be representing Goa at the Junior Athletics Championship to be held in Andhra Pradesh from November 2 to 6.
“Later I am selected to represent Goa at the Macau half marathon to be held on December 1. In the previous edition, I stood 7th in the overall category and 4th in the male group A for those born between 1990 and 2000,” Cardozo stated while adding that the Rs 10000 prize money would have come in handy during these two events.
Currently, Cardozo is practising at the Bambolim athletics stadium under the guidance of coach Digambar Narvekar who is also from Curca.
A second-year BCom student of Fr Agnel’s Pilar, Cardozo has won many laurels in the past which include first place in 5000 and 10000 metres at the 52nd State Athletics championship (U 20) in August.
He also won first place in the inter-collegiate cross country championship (10 km) organized by Goa University, 3rd place in 5000 metres and 4th place in 10000 metres at the 31st West Zone Junior Athletics Championship at Alwar-Rajasthan in 2019, besides many other feats.
