Agitated Chandor villagers on Wednesday stopped heavy trucks from plying in the village early morning, in violation of the notification barring plying of heavy vehicles through the village.
After the villagers came across the heavy trucks plying in the village, they stopped the vehicles and called the police for action.
A team of the Maina Curtorim police station headed by PI Ravi Desai rushed to Chandor to take stock of the situation. Pointing out that the heavy trucks were plying in the village in violation of the district Magistrate’s notification, PI Ravi challaned the erring trucks by imposing a fine of Rs 500 on each of the vehicles.
The PI told The Goan that the notification is clear that the heavy trucks cannot ply on the village road, adding that the five vehicles have been challanned since they have violated the MV rules.
Incidentally, the president of Salcete Truck Owners Association Franky Gomes informed that though the police has gone by the rule book in challaning the five trucks, the authorities should at least allow plying of empty trucks during the prescribed period.
“We can understand that the police have acted on the rules barring plying of the heavy vehicles in the village. However, the authorities can decide to allow empty trucks in the village,” he added.
