A viral infection is believed to have caused the death of pigs in the Modsai area of Fatorda in the last two days.
Doctors at the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary hospital, Sonsodo, however, have said the owner of the pigs could get a post mortem done on the pigs if they suspect poison behind the death.
Local residents have demanded action by the authorities in clearing the carcass of the pigs and have urged Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai to intervene and save them from the nuisance.
Dr Malory Ferrao, attached to the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary hospital, Sonsodo told the media that preliminary inquiry revealed that the pigs have died due to viral infection. She, however, said the owner should get the pigs for post mortem examination if they suspect poisoning.
When the media drew the attention of the veterinary doctor about the death of pigs in Maina-Curtorim last month, Dr Malory said a viral infection is behind the cause of death of pigs.
She advised the owner to go for the antibiotic therapy and save the remaining pigs. “With the anti-biotic therapy, we can prevent the secondary bacterial infection,” she added.
Meanwhile, residents of Modsai has called for a stop to the piggery activities in the locality, saying the activity has been causing nuisance to the inhabitants. “We fail to understand why the Margao Municipal Council has not acted on the piggery till date. We have now brought the matter to the notice of MLA Vijai Sardesai. Let us see what action the MLA and the authorities take in the matter,” he added.
