A 27-year-old Betim resident, a former employee with an online news portal and a local news channel has been arrested for cheating a tourist on the pretext of providing him with women for prostitution. According to complainant Shaikh Ubbedulla, the woman lured him to a hotel room on the pretext of providing escort service in the capital city and subsequently robbed him of cash and his mobile phone.
“On reaching the decided place, the accused lady began to assault the complainant. She wrongfully restrained him and extorted Rs 15,000 cash and his mobile phone. She threatened to expose him and demanded another Rs 20,000 to let him go,” the Panaji police said quoting the complaint.
The victim, who hails from Andhra Pradesh and checked into a three-star hotel, requested her to return his phone to arrange the additional sum. The accused instead handed over her phone. “He escaped from there and reached the police station to complain,” the official said.
The police, on examining the CCTV footage identified the woman and laid a trap to arrest her. “Meticulous planning and intelligence inputs collected with the help of security cameras, we apprehended Roshni Gawas,” the police said. The investigation further revealed that she has also worked for two political parties in the past. Booked under various cognizable sections of the Indian Penal Code, Gawas has applied for conditional bail.
