Worked hard to make Moira child-friendly: VCC Secretary

MAPUSA
Despite facing a fund crunch, the village child committee (VCC) of Moira has been conducting various activities for the last several years to make Moira a child-friendly village, said Florence Mendes, Secretary of Moira VCC.

Mendes also claimed that the credit to run the first functional VCC in the State goes to the village of Moira.

“For almost two years the authorities have failed to release funds to our VCC. But despite the resource crunch, a dynamic team of Moira VCC has been conducting a series of programmes to strive and make Moira a child-friendly village,” Mendes said.

The Moira VCC secretary was addressing a gathering during the eight annual prize distribution of drawing competition and the 1990 Moira Women’s Association Appreciation Awards at the A A de Moira.

The Moira VCC and the senior citizens of Moira along with the Bardez taluka legal aid service organised the programme recently.

Five senior citizens “ Angelica Cordeiro, Kranti Khorjuvenkar, Lourdes de Mello, Florence Mendes and Nanda Naik (posthumously) “ received that appreciation awards at the hands of Tushar Lotlikar Mapusa Police Inspector who was the chief guest at the function.

Lotlikar also released the eight year VCC calendar 2022 on the occasion.

Mendes recalled how DGP Indradev Shukla was instrumental to empower the women in the village to jointly fight for their rights during his tenure as the SDPO of Mapusa in 1990.

She said the act of fearlessly dealing with anti-social elements, holding a rasta roko for Kadamba bus service, water problems etc were some of the milestones achieved during the 1990-1995 period.

Noted advocate, Albertina Almeida spoke on the Senior Citizens Act 2007 and the rights of parents to live a life of dignity in their homes and with total care provided by their children.

Secretary of A.A. de Moira, Reis de Souza compered the function while VCC Secretary Florence Mendes gave a flashback on the1990 women awardees and VCC member Julia D’Souza proposed the vote of thanks.
