Yemeni, Syrian held for overstaying

MAPUSA: Two foreigners, a Yemeni and a Syrian, have been booked for overstaying in Goa without proper documents, police said on Tuesday.

The student visa of Nabil Mohammad Hamdi (30), a Yemeni national had expired in June 2015, while Qusey Mahmoud Alhamid (28), a Syrian, was living in Goa without a visa and passport from 2014.

The arrest of Qusey on Monday led police to the other accused, Hamdi, who was held on early Tuesday night.

According to Calangute Police, locals found Qusey moving around suspiciously near a hotel in Baga on Monday.

After receiving information, police took the alleged accused in custody and interrogated him. On investigation, it was found Qusey was coming to Goa off and on since 2010 on student visa. It was also found that since September 2014, he was staying in Goa without a visa and passport.

During the interrogation, Qusey told police that all his documents were with his friend, which led police to Hamdi.

Hamdi was arrested on Tuesday morning near the St Anthony chapel, Calangute.

On inquiries it was found that Hamdi’s student visa had expired in June 2015, while Qusey’s documents were not in his possession.

Hamdi was arrested under Section 7 (1) (3) of Foreign Order 1948 and Section 14 Foreigner’s Act 1946 while Qusey was arrested under section 3 (2) (a) and Section 6 (a) of the Passport Entry India rule 1950 and Section 3 of Passport Act 1920, police said. Further inquiries are in progress.
