Urban Development Minister Milind Naik on Wednesday evening said that biomining technology would be used to clear a huge dump of legacy waste lying at Sada garbage treatment plant
Naik was speaking to reporters after inspecting works of setting up of a legacy waste treatment plant at Sada.
He said a fully mechanised plant would be ready for operation by February 18.
“The plant will commence operations by around February 20. We have a legacy waste dump of around 1.20 lakh tonnes at Sada. Once the plant is ready, the dump could be cleared within four to five months,” Naik said. The minister said he had personally inspected the functioning of a similar plant, but of greater capacity, that was successfully functioning in Pune.
“Under this project of Goa Waste Management Corporation three contractors have been finalised who will treat the old legacy waste dumps all over Goa. Initially, there was a problem with regards to the availability of land to set up the plant. We then resolved the issue by taking over the land from the Art and Culture Department under GSUDA and giving it to the contractor for setting up the plant,” he informed.
He said the company in Pune handles and treats around 1500 tonnes of mixed waste daily. “The Goa plant will be functional in two shifts per day treating around 1000 tonnes of mixed legacy waste. If this plant works efficiently, then we might introduce two more machines for the treatment of waste” he added.
Later, speaking to the media, Kamlesh Singh, project engineer of Yashraj Infra Pvt Ltd, said that almost 70 per cent of the work to set up the plant was ready. “The plant will be a fully automated one. We will collect the waste, then introduce some chemical into it and once the gases from the waste are cleared, it will be brought to feeding the system from where it will be taken for primary waste segregation,” he described.
“We have a target of four months to clear the stacked waste of 1.20 lakh metric tonnes. We will try and clear it before the monsoon season begins,” Singh said.
