Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Suresh Prabhu has said that recycling is crucial for sustainability. Prabhu said this while addressing the 5th conference of Materials Recycling Association of India (MRAI), currently underway at Bambolim.
Prabhu said, “Materials will be the limiting force for the economic activity of tomorrow because there will not be so much material available to meet the growing demand. Therefore, recycling is important.”
Speaking to the gathering, Union Minister of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation and Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal said, “When it comes to recycling, why should we limit ourselves to talking only about metal? We use so much paper and rubber as well. Besides, people are also talking about e-waste. Therefore, the draft recycling policy, which is on the way, should talk about recycling all kinds of material.”
Sanjay Mehta, president, MRAI, said, “The recycling system in India is unorganized at the moment. More than 60% waste in trash bins can be recycled. We demand total exemption of duty on import of metal scraps. The recycling industry has a lot of potential, as it can create more than 5 million jobs in India.”
The conference also saw the presence of Union Minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Mines, Narendra Singh Tomar, and Union Minister of Steel, Chaudhary Birender Singh.
