Stating that any attempts to share Mhadei water with Karnataka would threaten the Mandovi river, Mhadei Bachao Abhiyan secretary and environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar on Saturday also questioned the State government's willingness to share water with Karnataka.
Addressing an awareness meet organised by Amhi Goenkar, Kerkar said Goa is blessed by 11 rivers, of which Mandovi is the biggest.
He claimed that Karnataka has, for the past three decades, been keen to build dams on various
tributaries of the Mandovi river, which originates in Karnataka,
"Sometimes, it is to generate hydro-electricity or make use of the water for irrigation. However in September 2006, the Karnataka government began making claims of drinking water paucity in Hubli and Dharwad to unilaterally go ahead and excavate canals at Kankumbi for the Kalasa-Bhandura Projects, which aims to divert 7.56 TMC of water in the Malaprabha basin," said Kerkar, adding, "But instead of safeguarding the river, our government is willing to share water with Karnataka. This is ridiculous."
Amhi Goenkar Convenor Adv. Shahikant Joshi also objected to the sharing of Mhadei water with Karnataka for political benefits ahead of the upcoming elections in Karnataka. "Corner meetings and various activities will be undertaken to create awareness among the people of Goa regarding the importance of the Mhadei river," said Joshi.
