The GOACAN has brought to the notice of the Transport Department that the ground plus one proposed tea stall being constructed at the Margao Bus Stand will pose a danger to public safety.
In a letter to the Director of Transport Rajan Satardekar, the NGO has pointed out that the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) has permitted the construction of a tea stall in the area allocated for two-wheeler parking and the said construction is close to the footpath of the main road heading to the Colva circle.
Moreover, the NGO said the location of the tea stall will lead to huge obstacles to the flow of traffic on the main road as many customers will park on the road and visit the tea stall. The tea stall will also create confusion at the two-wheeler parking area.
In the letter, GOACAN stated "We can understand that KTCL seeks to raise its revenue by increasing commercial activity at the bus stand, but we are unable to understand why this activity is sought to be done in this manner. There are already kiosks under the Deendayal Rojgar Yojana which are located in a straight line at the exit point of the bus stand. This stall can easily be relocated in that area and thereby avoid all these problems that will arise."
GOACAN has pointed out in its letter "That while Road Safety & Traffic Management is discussed at the State & South Goa District level and the public is directed to follow the law & safety procedures, it is very sad to see that a Government-owned Corporation like KTCL is undertaking such unsafe practices."
It may be noted that this is the third incident wherein KTCL has sought to allow commercial activity, the first being at the Panaji bus stand and the second at the Mapusa bus stand.
