Benaulim residents raise concerns over parking lot handover to private party

MARGAO
Members of the Benaulim gram sabha on Sunday raised concerns over plans by the Tourism Department to hand over the spacious parking lot near the beach to a private party.

The members also raised the issue of multi-dwelling units proposed in the village, demanding that the panchayat conduct a study on the village carrying capacity before issuing construction licences.

Raising the issue at the gram sabha chaired by deputy Sarpanch Glyda Rodrigues, gram sabha member Rudolf Barretto wondered whether the government had kept the Benaulim panchayat body in the loop over the question of handing over the parking lot to a private party.

He and other members expressed apprehensions that the parking space may not be available for parking for the benefit of the visitors, and the local business operators.

After much discussion, the gram sabha has adopted a resolution to call for an extra ordinary gram sabha to discuss and deliberate on the issue threadbare before chalking out the future course of action.

Meanwhile, the gram sabha members deliberated on the multi-dwelling units proposed in the village, and whether the village has the carrying capacity to play host to any more mega housing projects.

Rudolf underscored the need to conduct the carrying capacity of the village to find out whether the available infrastructure such as roads, water and power supply can support the incoming mega housing projects in the village.
