Congress leader Captain Viriato Fernandes on Thursday accused the State government of attempting to strangulate Goan farmers in financial debt by not clearing subsidies for the last two crops.Speaking to reporters in Vasco, Fernandes said there could be a conspiracy to hand over farmlands to the real estate lobby.
"The State government is going all over to state that they will go all out to help farmers, but these are all blatant lies because we have got news that over 5,000 farmers have not received their subsidies for the last two crops,” said Fernandes.
“The government is strangulating farmers by not paying their subsidies so as to keep them in debt which subsequently means that they will not be able to cultivate the farmlands.”
“The farmers who have taken loans from banks will have to give up their land and be forced to sell their land. This is how the double-engine Goa government will succeed in snatching away agricultural lands from Goans and give it to the real estate lobby which is a big conspiracy," Fernandes added.
