GWMC collects 11,035kg of waste in special drive

MARGAO

One-time cleaning of the littered stretches by the Goa Waste Management Corporation’s special drive over the last 12 days saw the contractor collecting around 11,035 kilograms of dry waste.

GWMC Managing Director, Levinson Martins, however, has made a fervent plea to the general public to stop dumping of waste on the roads and prevent re-emergence of these black spots in future. Instead, Martins have requested the public to hand over the waste to respective panchayat’s waste collectors.

He said GWMC had observed that apart from the major roads and highways in its highway cleaning contractor scope, few other roads had also become heavily littered and many black spots/dumps had been formed along these roads due to indiscriminate dumping.

Subsequently, taking cognizance of the same, GWMC had undertaken one-time cleaning of these littered stretches from November 9-12 through its Highway cleaning contractor and has collected 11,035 kgs dry waste in this special drive.

He added: "Also, since 2019 GWMC through its highway cleaning contractor has collected more than 1900 tons of littered waste from highways and major roads. This huge quantity of waste collected from roadsides indicates that the respective local bodies are not ensuring 100 per cent door-to-door collection in their jurisdiction which is compelling public/residents to throw waste along the roadsides”.

Martins have once again appealed to all the ULB’s and Village Panchayats in the State of Goa to ensure 100 per cent door-to-door waste collection from all its wards in its jurisdiction so that the public/residents are not compelled to throw waste on the roadsides.

This office sincerely appeals to the general public to stop dumping of waste on the roads and prevent re-emergence of these black spots in future and instead to handover the waste to respective Panchayat’s waste collector.

The GWMC appointed contactor has found as many as seven roads in Salcete littered with waste. And, of the total waste collected as part of the special drive, around 4000-odd kilograms of waste was collected from the Salcete roads include Power house circle, Aquem to Ramnagirir, Sao Jose de Areal, Floriano Vaz Circle to Ramnagiri junction via Housing Board, Rainbow valley Mugalli to Davorlim Chapel, Bolshe Circle, Margao to Sonsodo, Rawanfond Junction to St Joseph Chapel, Areal, St Sebastian Chapel, Chinchinim to Betul, Margao KTC to Verna via new western bypass.
