Two persons including the Vice Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council, Chandrashekar Benkar were booked for allegedly distributing cash to people for the February 14 assembly polls, a senior official informed.
“Two persons have been booked late Saturday night on charges of allegedly distributing cash to people to vote for a particular political party and thereby influencing them at Cunchelim, Mapusa. Based on the complaint of the flying squad we have registered an FIR,” a police official at the Mapusa Police Station said.
Based on the complaint of the flying squad, police registered a case against Chandrashekar Benkar and Rama Kashalkar.
According to reports, two persons came on a two-wheeler and began distributing envelopes with cash in ward 1 at Cunchelim, Mapusa.
Soon a commotion ensued in the area and a video showing a two-wheeler used to distribute cash in the ward went viral on social media.
A local, Nikita Parsekar alleged that the Vice Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council, Chandrashekar Benkar came to her house and offered cash of Rs 5,000 to vote for the BJP.
“We told him we don’t want the cash as he has never attended to us before. But he forcibly pushed the cash in our hands. He gave Rs 5,000 and asked us to vote for the BJP in the elections,” Parsekar alleged.
She further said that he left the scooter and took to his heels.
Some people alerted the flying squad which rushed to the spot along with the police.
The officials of the flying squad found some envelopes with Rs 6,000 in the dickey of the scooter.
The officials seized the two-wheeler and also took the statement of the local about the incident.
Based on the complaint of the flying squad, Mapusa Police registered a case under section 171 (B) and 188 of the IPC.
Further investigation is on.
