A tie-up with top Bengaluru based National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) to train its team is in the offing and will be a big boost to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB) in Bambolim where a new 100-bedded hospital is getting ready and will be inaugurated soon.
The process of signing an agreement with NIMHANS, Bengaluru for exchange programmes in mental health and well being is on, according to Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, who said it will enable experts from NIMHANS to train the team at Goa IPHB.
"Following my discussions with representatives of NIMHANS, we are currently in the process of signing an agreement between IPHB and NIMHANS to organize an exchange programme," Rane said, adding it will enable experts to train the Goan team and help improve mental wellbeing in the State.
Rane also said, taking to his handle on microblogging site Twitter, that the setting up of the new 100-bedded centre is being expedited with the support of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, and that it would be inaugurated soon.
Meanwhile, Rane said the harvesting of organs from the brain-dead patient at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has helped save four lives including two patients of the GMC itself.
The SOTTO centre at GMC had on Sunday successfully harvested the heart, liver and kidneys of the 19-year-old brain dead male patient, a native of UP after the father granted his consent. The heart and liver were transported onsward via Dabolim airport to Mumbai and Ahmedabad respectively.
According to GMC Dean Dr Bandekar, the heart was delivered to the Kokilaben hospital in Mumbai, where it was successfully transplanted to a patient, who is under observation in the ICU. The liver was also successfully transplanted to a patient in Ahmedabad, he added.
The kidneys, meanwhile, were given to two patients who were on the waitlist and matched the blood group. Both the kidney transplants to patients, one aged 37 and the other in his forties, were successfully carried out at the GMC itself. Both the patients are in the ICU and doing well, Dr Bandekar added.
Meanwhile, the liver transplant facility at the GMC will be commissioned next year, Dr Bandekar said.
