MARGAO
Former chief minister Churchill Alemao has made a fervent plea to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to order an inquiry into the social media post of one Abhishek Banerjee against St Francis Xavier.
Condemning the remarks, Churchill, however, appealed to the people to stay calm and maintain peace. Saying he had made a complaint to the police to investigate into the social media post of Banerjee, Churchill told the media the accused had insulted the people of Goa, who revere St Francis Xavier as a Saint and Goencho Saib.
"Goa is safe because of the blessings and protection of St Francis Xavier. There is peace and people live in perfect harmony in Goa. St Francis Xavier has protected Goa from storms and floods over the last 450 years," Churchill said.
The former Benaulim MLA recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Goa had unveiled government plans for the forthcoming Exposition of St Francis Xavier in November this year.
"I appeal to the people to avoid making statements against other religions. We the people of Goa have been living in peace and communal brotherhood and we should all strive to maintain peace and amity," he added.
