Come Tuesday and the Salpem Lake fields which was once a barren land is all set to be painted green as the transplantation process is scheduled in the once picturesque fields on June 20.Navelim village development committee along with the village biodiversity management committee had taken the initiative to revive the fields through community farming despite facing a host of problems including discharge of untreated sewage into the drain adjacent to the fields.
Fr George Quadros, the paddy man of Goa took the initiative on behalf of the farmers to prepare the one lakh square meters which will be brought under cultivation this monsoon.
The VDC and the BMC have invited students from various schools in Navelim to witness the historic moment of the revival of the fields after over three decades. The students will be given an opportunity to interact with farmers, officials from agriculture department, state bio-diversity management board and others during the day-long programme.
